passport on it's way fo the orphanage

Karuna's passport changed again this morning to "dispatched" along with a tracking number so we can check where it actually is. This will be the last status change we will get. His passport should arrive at GKF tomorrow or Saturday so we are still thinking we will be leaving next Thursday(4/26) for our very long journey to India. Hopefully we will have no problems getting plane reservation so quickly. Either way I'm getting extremely nervous and excited all at the same time. One of the volunteers at the orphanage is going to try to let us Skype with him tomorrow morning. We will be able to tell him a date when we will be there :-) I know some of you have been to India to bring your children home. Give me any pointers if you want that really helped you when you were there. Thanks again for all your prayers and support. More details coming soon.

  2. Such wonderful and long awaited news!
Zip lock bags and a roll of mini duct tape. (Your suitcases take a beating!) If you are planning on shopping, I made a rupee conversion chart to put in my wallet so I would know at a glance how much in US dollars something cost. I also had a list of people I was trying to bring a souvenir home for.

I also brought a length of twine and clothes pins to wash out some clothing in the hotel. An extra shirt in a carry on bag was helpful too...younger kids often get nauseous and toss their cookies on you or if your luggage gets lost, at least you have something clean to wear. A snack or two that you like...as finding quick snacks there may be more difficult on the fly.

    Yay! Julie

  3. Julie already gave my number one tip -- in your carry-on for the ride home, bring extra clothes for you and Karuna, along with ziplock bags! Anya threw up on me and it was so nice to have clean clothes for me too. :o) Another mom told me to do that, so I'm sharing the love.

I think my only other advice is to try and enjoy India! We are usually so focused on meeting our child that it can be hard to remember to actually take lots of non-child pictures, and soak in details about our child's birth country. I also was careful to record the names of different people who helped us, and take photos of the caregivers -- we may never get to meet her birth family, so I felt it was important to have names and pictures of the people in the orphanage.

So, so happy for you!!!! And praying for your first days together!

  5. Congratulations. I found that bringing toys, and things to do like coloring books, and crayons was helpful. Also, portable snacks like fruit snacks, granola etc. They love cameras, but becareful, my little sweetie deleted all my photos, so bring an extra SD card, because if you don't write over them, a photo shop back home can recover them, as long as you don't photograph over them. :) Also, bring children's tylenol, and cough syrup incase he is sick. Bring a picture book of people, and things you would like to show him,and talk to him about. Google translater is helpful. :) Nix. :) Most of the kids have lice. Congratulations. Good luck. Have fun.
